Novi Sad, Neoplanta, Ujvidegh, Neusatz... Call it as you wish, its 300.000 inhabitants wouldn't mind. As they never did.
Novi Sad is a beautiful town in the province of Vojvodina, somewhere in the middle of all the Balkan mess. It was founded in 1694. and was proclaimed 'free royal city" in 1748. by Maria Theresa. Since then, it is always close enough to suffer from the wars around (of which, its three demolished bridges are the sad testimony), far enough not to be destroyed.
Its rich cultural and historical heritage made it an elegant and sophisticated plece. Its laid-back and relaxed citizens make it a very friendly place to live and come back.
On the other side of the river Danube, sits Petrovaradin fortress, or Djava, as we like to call it. It is one of the oldest and biggest fortresses from Austro-Hungarian monarchy, with 16km of mysterious underground corridors.
Today, it is the home of artists, history, and of EXIT festival. The place where in summer, thousands of people join an unforgetable musical experience
Many parks in the city certainly add to its relaxed atmosphere.
If that is not enough "green" and quiet, mountain Fruska Gora is not far
away. Novi Sad is also known as city of the friendship and the hospitality.
